JOB TITLE: Part-time Faculty
DIVISION: Walden University/NTU School of Engineering and Applied Science
REPORTS TO: Faculty Chair
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Part-time Faculty will teach courses that have been recorded by Contributing Scholars.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Acts as the course instructor and interacts directly with students.
- Develops exams and assignments; grades student assignments and exams according to grading rubrics; interacts, as needed, with the Contributing Scholar who recorded the course.
- Creates schedule for assignments and exams.
- Keeps a record of student grades and submits final grade list to the Walden Registrar at the end of term.
- Interacts with students on a frequent and regular basis to answer academic questions and facilitate discussions by email and/or in the online classroom.
- Provides input to the course and instructor evaluation processes.
- Provides input to the CS Faculty, Faculty Chair, and the course development team regarding potential improvements to the course instructional design. The PtF is not responsible for non-academic support questions (these are covered by the Course Concierge).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, and RESOURCES REQUIRED:
A doctorate in the appropriate engineering discipline or related field is preferred; a Master's degree with suitable experience may be acceptable. Generally at least two years of teaching experience at the university level as a full-time or part-time faculty member is expected, additional online teaching experience is preferred. Industry experience is also a plus. Occasional travel may be required.
The following minimum computer resources will be required:
- High-speed internet access, at least equivalent to cable modem or DSL
- Pentium III 933 MHz CPU
- 256 MB RAM
- 10 Gigabyte Hard Drive
- 16M AGP video RAM
- 52X CD-ROM Drive
- 17" SVGA Color Monitor capable of up to 1024x768 (85 Hz) non-interlaced resolution
- 10/100 Network Card
- Keyboard and PS/2 Mouse
- Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional
- Office Professional 2000 or Office XP
- Internet Explorer 5.5 or above
- Windows Media Player 9 or above
A recent-model (later than 2003) Apple computer running the VirtualPC emulator system that can achieve equivalent performance to the above is also acceptable. Note the major incompatibility forcing the emulator use is the Virage streaming media server employed to stream online courses. Apple is not yet supported in this system.
