National Technological University has an unparalleled pedigree as a distance-learning and e-learning organization. NTU was founded in 1984 as the first accredited "virtual" university. Lionel Baldwin, then dean of engineering at Colorado State University, foresaw how advanced technology could be used to offer engineering professionals the highest level of academic continuing education. With the support of major technology companies such as IBM, Motorola, and Hewlett-Packard, NTU was formed to deliver academic courses via unique satellite network directly to corporations' training facilities. In 1984, NTU began offering degree programs using courses supplied by seven universities. Today NTU offers several master's degree programs with courses supplied through a consortium of U.S. universities. Courses are delivered online and via CD-ROM, DVD and videotape.
In 1999, NTU created a for-profit entity called National Technological University Corporation (NTUC), which acquired the assets of PBS The Business Channel from the Public Broadcasting Service. This substantially broadened the range of non-credit professional development courses offered. Beginning in 2000 and up through February 2002, all professional development courses were marketed through a new brand, PBS The Business & Technology Network. In November 2000, NTUC officially changed its name to Stratys Learning Solutions, although the courses continued to be marketed through the two brands, NTU and PBS The Business & Technology Network.
In February 2002, Sylvan Online Higher Education assumed control of Stratys and NTU with a commitment to strengthen and expand the educational mission of National Technological University. In May 2004, Sylvan renewed its commitment to focusing solely on higher education and changed its name to Laureate Education, Inc. With the financial backing of Laureate, and a merger planned in 2005 with Walden University, NTU is charting a new course of growth with a renewed determination to provide an exceptional academic experience to working professionals.
Our Content Partners and Alliances
National Technological University has access to outstanding educational and training content in large part because of its alliances and partnerships. Twice a year, NTU produces and updates courses in an intensive "camp" located at Disney/MGM Studios in Florida, where it brings award-winning faculty and course designers together to create outstanding course materials.
