OPTI 575 Optical Thin Films

Course Description: The optical properties of single films, design and multilayer optical coatings, calculation and visualization aids, accurate computation methods, introduction to manufacturing methods, non-ideal behavior of thin films.

Course Objectives: Understanding of thin-film optics and the various structures that are used in design, manufacture and employment of optical coatings.

Course Outline by Topical Areas:
Introduction
Properties of single metal and dielectric films.
Quarter and Half Wave layers.
Introduction to multilayer coatings.
Computation
Characteristic matrices.
Computing.
The vector diagram.
The admittance diagram.
Back-of-the-envelope techniques for approximate calculation and improved understanding of multilayer properties.
The Design of Optical Coating
Antireflection coatings.
High reflectance coatings.
Edge filters.
Bandpass filters - metal-dielectric and all-dielectric filters.
Coatings for ultrafast applications.
Titled Films
Oblique incidence - polariation.
The effect of tilting on multilayer coatings.
The design of polarizers.
The minimization of the effects of tilting.
Special Techniques
Equivalent admittances of symmetrical periods.
Automatic design and synthesis.
Real Coatings
Manufacturing processes and techniques.
Tolerancing and monitoring.
Real thin-film behavior.
Thin-film microstructure and its effects on film properties.
