OPTI 541 Introduction to Lasers

This course is not available in the current term

Course Description: This course covers the fundamental physical processes relevant to lasers and surveys a variety of specific laser systems.

Course Objectives: To provide a solid understanding of the principles of lasers that will allow the student to understand more detailed material on specific lasers.

Introductory concepts
Interaction of radiation with atoms and ions
Energy Levels and Transitions in Molecules and Semiconductors
Ray and Wave Propagation
Optical Resonators
Pumping Processes
Continuous Wave Laser Behavior
Transient Laser Behavior
Survey of Specific Lasers


Course Requirements:
Homework: Approximate 2-4 problems per week
Examinations: Midterm and Final Exam
Computer Language: None required
