This course is not available in the current term

Course Description: Propagation in optical media. Optical fibers. Optical sources and detectors. Fiber optic communications systems.

Course Objectives: The objective of this course is the presentation of material for the three elements of a fiber optical communication link - a light source, the fiber, and the detector/receiver amplifier including some applications to wave-guide division multiplex technology (WDM).

Course Outline by Topical Areas:
System overview. Elementary propagation. Material dispersion. Total dispersion. Attenuation in fibers. Overview-Non-Linear and scattering. Step index fibers. Graded index fibers. Single mode fibers. Fabrication of fibers and splices. Fiber specifications etc. Sources and detectors overview. Heterojunctions. Luminescence. Led design for opt. comm. Laser basics. Semiconductor lasers. Pin detectors. Avalanche pin detectors. The receiver amplifier. Light modulators. Erbium doped fiber lasers and amplifiers. Bragg reflectors.

Course Requirements:
Homework: One assignment every one to two weeks
Examinations: Midterm and final- take home exams
Computer Language: No computer language required
Computer Facilities: Access to a computer for mathematical calculations may be helpful, but not required, E-mail access desired
Laboratory: Lab only for on-campus students
Project: One assigned report in optical engineering
