ECEN 5833 Fiber-Optic Communications Systems
Former Oklahoma State University Course Number: EM 513-OE
This course is not available in the current term

Course Description: Five generations of fiber-optic communication systems described in detail. Technical advances and increased capability of each system. Historical framework of how technical capability at the time forced technical decisions. A systems engineering point of view, emphasizing optimization of all components of the optical fiber link. Description given in syllabus: The introduction of optical fiber based communication systems has increased the transmission capacity of information links by 1000 times. The background leading up to the remarkable revolution in our communication capability will be reviewed. The five generations of fiber-optic communication systems will be described in detail, focusing on the technical advances and increased capability of each system. This will be done in a historical framework showing how the technical capability at the time forced the technical decisions. The presentation will be from a systems engineering point of view, emphasizing the optimization of all the components of the entire optical fiber link.

Course Objectives: To introduce optical fiber based communication systems that have increased the transmission capacity of information. To introduce five generations of fiber-optic communication systems, focusing on the technical advances and increased capability of each system.

Course Outline by Topical Areas:
Optical Fibers
Optical Sources and Transmitters
Optical Detectors and Receivers
Coherent Lightwave Systems
Multichannel Communication Systems
Optical Amplifiers
Soliton Communication Systems

Course Requirements:
Homework: No graded homework, but there are suggested problems.
Examinations: Two examinations, and one final. NTU Students will be expected to take their exams the same time/day at the on-campus students. To make this possible, these lectures will be posted on Engineering Distance Education's website: http://de.ceat.okstate.edu/ no later than 2-4 hours after the live lecture.
